Settle, a self described ancient market town located in the Craven District of North Yorkshire is perhaps most noted for being the starting point of the Settle-Carlisle railway, its access to the Yorkshire Dales and its historic trade in cotton spinning; not Bridge End, a football ground situated north of the town, home to Settle United AFC.
In the groundhopping community though, it's a different story. The ground, which was first used when the club established in 1884 (as Settle FC) has become something of a mecca for football enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Without even needing to venture into the town itself (though it would be churlish not to), you can enjoy the perks of the Settle-Carlisle railway line (which overlooks the pitch), the views of the aforementioned Yorkshire Dales and one of its still standing cotton mill chimneys (now converted into a farm shop and cafe), all from the ground itself.
Settle United AFC play in the East Lancashire Football League (yes, the name is deceiving) and at the time of writing are positioned 7th in the Premier Division.
Bridge End is hemmed in by dry stone walls on one side and opposite, the River Ribble creating a natural moat-like barrier, both of which are welcome additions to the quaint, picturesque feel to the ground.
The pitch is railed off on two sides, hosting an array of advertising boards from local businesses. The club proudly boasts its orange and black crest on signage around the ground and facilities include a changing room block and refreshments hatch.
Being in such close proximity to the river it does have its fair share of flooding issues, but attesting to the quality of the playing surface, Bridge End is used frequently for County Cup finals.
The match photographed here was a last 16 round of The Presidents Cup 22/23 (a majority East Lancashire League affair), with the opposition being Padiham Juniors Community FC. Padiham are another East Lancs League side, though are currently placed 3rd in the division below.
It felt like a fairly well tempered contest between these two teams, with Settle showing their superior league standing scoring in the first few minutes, pleasing the thirty or so spectators.
As the match progressed, Settle forced Padiham to concede a further three goals whilst maintaining a clean sheet. Settle will now proceed to the quarter finals, while Padiham turn their attention to the league.
