Grandstand VUC
On his tour of historic football clubs in The Hague, Marc Maurits came across this gem of a grandstand. It is the stand of HSV VUC.
The concrete enclosure with wooden benches dates back to just after the Second World War. Its all-wood predecessor burned down in 1948.
The grandstand exudes nostalgia with its warped wooden benches and peeling paint.
Wooden stairs to reach the grandstand complete the picture.
When the club moved from the site at the Schenkkade to the current site, Het Kleine Loo, in 1969, the stands moved with the club. This was probably the best decision a board could ever make.
The club was founded on August 15, 1909 when Voorwaarts from The Hague (March 3, 1901) and Utile Dulci from Delft (October 1, 1905) decided to continue together.
HSV VUC was born.
After the introduction of professional football in 1954, the club has always remained an amateur club.
In 1944, VUC came second in the battle for the National Championship.
The Volewijckers from Amsterdam turned out to be a size too big for the ‘Hagenezen’ in a final which made the news.
The club also made a name for itself in the battle for the KNVB Cup.
After two lost finals in 1907 and 1920, the club managed to win the final of the then called HoldertBeker in 1927 against Vitesse from Arnhem.
Oh the sights this grandstand has seen.
