Mondays are not made for football. Unless it’s your favourite TV-show.
Despite the daily traffic jam in the Ruhr area and the 7 o’clock kick-off, 2500 Rot-Weiss Essen supporters made the 60 km trip to Sportpark Höhenberg in Cologne for the 3. Liga match between Viktoria Cologne and Rot-Weiss Essen.
Most of the tickets were purchased in advance, but from five o’clock, tickets were available at the gate of the away section. Nobody cares when the tickets arrived 10 minutes too late when you’re waiting in the February sun.
Rot-Weiss Essen are having a hard time at the 3rd level and made it six in a row without a win. Three points in Cologne would have been more than welcome. But it was a match like many others this season.
Both teams were unable to create any chances. The highlight must have been the massive pyro by the Essen supporters, just after the half-time break and also a very good Kutte jacket on display. Before the flares burnt out and smoke was cleared, Viktoria Cologne scored the only goal of the match.
