Friday inferno: Rockets at the DTS-Bennekom derby

That football can be an annoying interruption to a fun day - or in this case, a fun night out - was once again evident last Friday.

It was unusually quiet as we stood at Sportpark Inschoten half an hour before kickoff for DTS’35 vs. Bennekom.

Strange, because this Gelderland derby at the sixth tier between "Door Training Sterk" from Ede and nearby Bennekom, just six kilometres away, usually draws a big crowd.

They say the truth is stranger than fiction.

Allegedly a group of supporters had gained entry to the ground without paying, and after consultation with the heavily deployed police, it was decided to close the gates - meaning no one could enter or leave.

By now, 1,500 spectators were stuck outside, and the match was delayed by 45 minutes.

Just before kick-off, the floodlights went out, and as both teams took to the field, all hell broke loose. The fire at Heathrow Airport in England made the news but the Bennekom fans made the sky orange in their own way.

Flashes, flares, and an explosion of fireworks that would put any celebration to shame were let off in a staggering display.

It was difficult for the match to live up to the crazy surroundings the match took place in. Some fans watched on from an elevated view of a cherry picker, as you do.

Then, there was concern when, just before half-time, a DTS player suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, he was able to walk off the pitch with some assistance.

At half-time, a supporter decided to liven things up once more by grabbing the corner flag.

After the break, the home side took the lead. Bennekom’s late attacking push lead to nothing.

Outside, the unrest continued for quite some time.
